You worked hard to find and hire those new employees. Do you want to know how to keep them? To tip the odds in your favor, use the 4 C’s of Onboarding to make them feel valued and engaged from Day One. To do this, you will need a Comprehensive Onboarding Plan that includes The Cornerstones of Onboarding: Compliance, Clarity, Culture, and Connections

  1. Compliance: The first cornerstone of any onboarding program is compliance. You can cover this portion of onboarding by taking care of the legal items, such as:
    • I-9/E-Verify
    • State and Federal Tax Forms
    • Payroll Set Up
    • Benefit Enrollment
  2. Clarity: The onboarding process is a great time to review any areas that might need more explanation, such as:
    • Employee Handbook – make sure they understand the organization’s policies and procedures
    • Job Description – ensure they know the organization’s expectations for performance, both individually and for the team
    • Organization Chart – provide some detail about each department’s role in the overall mission of the organization
  3. CultureNew employees are usually anxious enough about living up to your expectations, so set them up for success by explaining the different norms that define how the employees within your organization interact with each other.
  4. Connections: Provide the new employee with an overview of their teammates’ roles and current projects they are working on and make a brief introduction. Doing so can help your employee feel as if they already know their team and give them a jump start on work priorities.

Remember: the first day of a new job can be exciting and nerve-racking for an employee. It can also be the pivotal moment for how they view your organization and whether they intend to stay long-term or just until they receive their next job offer. Use The 4 C’s of Onboarding to lay the foundation for a great employment experience.
