IRS Updates Mileage Rate for 2026

Counting taxes. Tax returns

Did you know the IRS updated standard mileage rates for 2026 mid-year due to rising fuel costs? For business driving, the rate is 72.5 cents per mile from January 1 through June 30, 2026, and 76 cents per mile from July 1 through December 31, 2026, following a mid-year increase. The charitable mileage rate remains unchanged at 14 cents per mile.

Employers that reimburse employees for business travel and self-employed individuals who claim mileage deductions should ensure mileage tracking systems and reimbursement practices reflect the correct rate for the applicable period. Accurate mileage records remain essential for tax compliance and reimbursement documentation.

Look for the IRS to publish the 2027 mileage rate in late December 2026.
